Looking to buy a new appliance? With the birth of tighter restrictions on energy usage, more and more companies are manufacturing appliances that are energy-efficient. For consumers, that’s great news! Imagine cutting your electric bill every month, right? However, how much do you know about these energy-efficient appliances? Do you even have an idea about the process it needs to undergo through?

Let’s begin by talking about the ‘Energy Star’ logo we see on most appliances today. This blue sticker is an indication that your appliance has lower energy consumption compared to its predecessor.

The Origin of Energy Star

In 1992, the Environment Protection Agency initiated the Energy Star program which aims to lessen the energy consumption of computers. During that time, personal computers were new to the market and consumers had no idea of its impact to their monthly consumption. Today, most, if not all manufacturers are gearing towards the same objective of making their appliance energy-efficient. What the program does is that it tests products and ensures that it will deliver superior quality while using a lower amount of energy.

How Manufacturers Re-Design their Appliance

Redesigning appliance to pass the Energy Star standards comes with a price. Companies need to allot budget for research and product development. Years ago, non-Energy Star appliance would cost lower than the certified ones. However, because of the recent high demand, certified and non-certified products almost cost the same. If you are going to think long term, you can generate more savings if you get Energy Star appliance. So we suggest that you opt for such.

Do you wonder how efficient these new appliances are?

Cooker Hob

The new cooker hob can heat cookware more quickly and it does not produce excess waste heat. It saves you money and you get to enjoy a cooler kitchen area.

Refrigerator

The latest models of refrigerator consume 40% less energy. That can save you around SGD 150 in a year!

Washing Machine

Newer washing machines can extract more water from your clothing and this lessens the drying time. Some of these new washers only require 50% less water compared to the traditional ones.

Requirements to have an Energy Star Logo

When you go to appliance stores, you will notice an ‘Energy Guide’ label. This is the yellow tag found in major appliance. This label is a test result according to the Department of Energy, showing how much energy it consumes. And if it meets a specific criteria, an Energy Star label will be added.

Its Benefits to the Environment

Using appliance that are energy-efficient is not just good for the end-users budget. It also helps the environment by cutting down the greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases, if you must know, contribute to the increased warmth we experience on the Earth’s surface. It is one of the reasons for the drastic climate change.

With the advantages one can get from the energy-saving appliances, it can be tempting to change everything you have at home. However, that can be extremely costly. What we suggest is changing appliance that you regularly use. How about starting with your lights and refrigerator first?
