Maintaining your home is not just to keep it clean or to make it pleasing to one’s eye, it’s to ensure that you have a safer home for the entire family. A lot of people do not conduct regular maintenance believing that it’s just a waste of money. But imagine if disaster strikes within your house. Most of it could have been prevented if you take time to look around and check your home.

If you don’t know where to start, here’s a quick list to guide you.

Dust Your Light Fixtures

A safer home has well-dusted light fixtures. By simply dusting your light fixtures, you are maximizing its full potential to illuminate your home. Dust can build up and that can make your lights dimmer. This can strain your eyes and may result in further problems with your vision.

Clean Your Fans

Similar to your light fixtures, regular cleaning of your fans is recommended. You need to clean not just the blades, but the other parts as well. You can use your vacuum’s brush to clean up dirt and lint. If possible, remove the blades and grills and clean it with detergent and water. Before you assemble it, make sure that all parts are dry.

Have Your AC Tuned Up

Just so you know, your air conditioner needs to be maintained every 3 months. We suggest that you ask a professional to do the job for you. This way, you can be sure that everything will be handled perfectly. Not cleaning your air conditioner might result to respiratory-related diseases.

Organize Your Stuff

You also need to make it a habit to organize your things. Keep the ones that you need and throw others that no longer serve its purpose. The more things you have means more clutter. In case you don’t know, a cluttered house is an open invitation for accidents to happen.

Clean Your Carpet or Area Rug

Sometimes, we enjoy laying on area rugs but we don’t realize how dirty it is. Can you just imagine the bacteria you’d get from your carpet? It can cause you a number of illnesses. To prevent that from happening, clean your rug by using a vacuum. You can also use a brush to remove hair. In fact, you can make your own cleaner by adding liquid dish-washing soap with warm water. Remember not to use hot water because it might shrink and fade your rug. Cleaning the carpet or area rug surely makes a safer home!

Check Your Locks

Always ensure that your locks are intact. Check your doors and windows. You wouldn’t want intruders to easily get in your house, would you? If possible, change it as regularly as you can.

Inspect Your Fire Extinguishers or Smoke Detectors

It is also advisable that you check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The batteries should be replaced and the fire extinguisher should still be valid. They say that fire extinguishers should work for 15 years. But just to be sure, always check its pressure on a monthly basis. The needle should be in the green area at all times.

Check your Plumbing System

Ideally, you have to inspect your plumbing system if there are leaks. Not doing so might cause future damages. It’s not just about getting your floor wet, it’s about your appliance getting soaked! And that’s where the bigger problems may arise.

Truth be told, maintaining a home is not that easy. If you want to ensure that your home is in optimum condition, you might need to get the services of a professional. And to save further cost, choose a service like HomeProtect where you can get home maintenance for a year.
